The area is now in daily use by both young and old! It’s also exciting to be able to demonstrate that we take both universal design and the environment seriously with the new and unique ground cover.
Safe, Sustainable and Inclusive
This is the first activity area built with ShockDeck™ impact-attenuating safety surfacing. For the client and project owners, it was important to create a meeting place for healthy physical activity—with a strong focus on inclusion and environmental responsibility.
The play elements in the motor skills park appeal to a wide age range and offer easy access. The firm surface, which also provides effective impact attenuation, makes it possible for wheelchair users to take part. This helps keep the threshold low, so as many people as possible can join in the activity and community.
The project was completed in April 2024 and is a collaboration between Veavågen Church and the Veavågen local community committee (Karmøy). It is also the first commercial project to use ShockDeck™ safety surfacing. Here, ShockDeck™ is built using CU-treated pine deck boards.

Microplastic-free playground surfacing
With a strong focus on universal design and environmental performance, the range of impact-attenuating surfacing options is often limited. With ShockDeck™, we address a long-awaited innovation: safety surfacing that is not only roll-friendly, but also avoids adding microplastic granules and chemical-based binders to the natural environment and the play space.
The playground in Veavågen is approx. 140 m². Choosing poured-in-place rubber surfacing would have required around 5.6 tonnes of rubber granules and 700 litres of binder. Poured-in-place rubber has many good qualities, but it can be challenging from an environmental perspective. By comparison, ShockDeck™ requires less than half the material volume (approx. 2.5 tonnes). It is primarily made from environmentally friendly timber and is completely free from glue/adhesives and microplastics.

– The choice of ShockDeck as the playground surface was aesthetically pleasing, which was important for the overall look and respect for the church building.
